About Me: I'm Jon, 27 years old for a few more months. Born and raised in Mesa, Arizona. Have lived in Arizona all of my life. I'm hoping that changes sooner or later! Right now I own a home in Mesa. I still go to college because I haven't figured out exactly what I want to do in life. I am presently a computer engineer for PMT Ambulance in Tempe, Arizona. It's a good gig. I'm the type of person who wants to learn as much as possible and continue trying new things in life just to keep life interesting. I want to live in different places, tackle new careers, make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, grow as a person every day and continue to learn everything about life that I consider remotely interesting. And of course, I absolutely love bowling when I can figure it out, and I'm trying to figure out golf as well, but that is coming along a bit slower. I like making scenes, causing a ruckus, embarrassing everyone besides myself, burning the midnight oil, making points, doing the "wang chung", scaring the baby jesus, making fun of hippies, never getting offended, accepting things for how they are, impressing people, being charismatic, making friends, earning respect, doing things that take my mind off of how much life can suck, staying up till 3AM, sleeping in, bowling, golf, good beer, good friends, the female body, following my own rules, learning, going to school, watching the Food Channel and the Travel Channel, not worrying, not thinking, having a good beer buzz, being comfortably numb, being incredibly excited, adrenaline thrills, gambling, being good at things that I enjoy, always planning my retirement, seeing everything there is in this world worth seeing... even the things that probably aren't worth seeing like the worlds biggest ball of yarn, being interesting, being spontaneous, and doing everything I can possibly do to keep life interesting and never having any regrets, and also stand up comedy.
Music: Music is everything!!! I listen to pretty much everything once, and a million times if I find it remotely appealing. I have all sorts of tastes and I don't listen to only one type. Some of my absolute favorites include: DEFTONES, the Smiths, Morrissey, ...and you will know us by the trail of dead, Team Sleep, the Cure, Joy Division, Clutch, Snot, the Pixies, Far, TV on the Radio, Coheed and Cambria, death cab for cutie, Hieroglyphics, the Mars Volta, Sparta, At the Drive-In, Muse, Radiohead, Gorillaz, New Order, (old) weezer, Foo Fighters, Down, Pantera, Soulfly, Dredg, Duran Duran, Head Automatica, Queens of the Stone Age, Cold War Kids, Rage Against the Machine, (old) Sugar Ray, Bobby Brown, Andrea Bocelli, Audioslave, Avril Lavigne!, Bad Religion, Beastie Boys, The Shins, System of a Down, Pink Floyd, Prince, NIN, Modest Mouse, Madonna, (some) Linkin Park
Movies: Big Lebowski!, Swingers, Requiem for a Dream, Big Kahuna, Glengary Glen Ross, The Usual Suspects, Snatch, Rounders, Memento, Leaving Las Vegas, Basketball Diaries, most anything with Kevin Spacey or Edward Norton
TV: Arrested Development, the Office, Family Guy, Law & Order, Curb Your Enthusiasm
Books: The God Delusion- Richard Dawkins. Why Darwin Matters- Michael Shermer. Most anything by Dawkins, Shermer, Sam Harris, Stephen King
Likes: Definitely dig sports, (D-Backs, Coyotes, Suns, even the Arizona Cardinals!!!), all ASU sports. Bowling- (Patrick Allen owns!), beer, good restaurants, different ethnic foods, road trips, traveling, VEGAS!, getting out of Arizona as much as possible. Girls who are fun and are ambitious, have hot hair, take care of themselves, and share the same interests as me. Girls who bowl are awesome. :D
Dislikes: smokers, druggies, drama, politics, ignorance, the christian right, bigots, close-minded people, uneducated people, and basically people with nothing to offer .
Hobbies: hmmm, well... sports, bowling, golf, concerts, learning, going to school
Vices: eh, nothing to admit here ;)
    Virtues: dependable
Heroes: Richard Dawkins, and there are many stand up comedians who show me not only the humor in life, but also teach us many simple lessons, and they include: david cross, lewis black, mitch hedberg, dave attell, dane cook, george carlin, chris rock, patton oswalt, jay mohr, bill hicks, joe rogan, doug stanhope, and harland williams

    february update

    Tuesday, February 12, 2008, 02:53 PM [General]

I hadn't realized that it had been a month since I last updated..  Which means there have been at least 3 weeks of bowling to discuss.  I guess part of the problem is that the last few weeks really hadn't been that good to me.  I recall one week last month I barely managed a 525 series..  I have turned things around a bit the last few weeks though.

I'll try to block the bad memories because they only depress me.  So, last week was the start of the 3rd "quarter" of bowling in the league.  Our team had been on a downward spiral for awhile, partly because a lot of the bowlers had been gone for various reasons.  This last week was no different.  We only had three guys including myself "suit up".  On top of that, we were all a bit under the weather.

First game for me was rather unremarkable.  The lanes were playing real dry on the outside and pretty wet down the middle.  I tried to convince myself that I could consistently play around the 5 board and be successful.  Sadly that wasn't the case.  It seemed my ball speed was just too fast, so I made the mistake of moving boards and maintaining speed.  This resulted in a whopping 165 game to begin.  In the 10th frame of that game I decided I needed to take a drastic approach to find a new line.  At the end of the game I took everything into account and prepared for the second game.

All of the mental preperation was doing must have paid off because my second game was a complete 180 degree change.  I figured at that point my ball speed was the problem so I went with a straight up 10 board line with a much slower speed.  I finally found a line that would work the rest of the night.  So much in fact that my second game was a 232.  It doesn't hurt when you are also able to pick up your spares to keep the confidence up.  I finally strung together strikes in a row and at the end of the second game my confidence was soaring.

It goes without saying that I continued my torrid run through the 3rd game.  Not even a second frame open could slow me down.  After the open I put together 6 strikes in a row, only to be brought back to earth by a ringing 10 pin in the 9th.  I ended with a 237 for a really nice 635 series.

For the last few weeks I had really not been looking forward to bowling night.  It doesn't help when you are bowling like shit.  I had promised myself I'd get out for some practice but that still hasn't happened either.  Then all of a sudden I have some success last week and I feel like I'm back on track again.  So, I'm really anxious for bowling tonight for the first time in awhile.  Bowling shouldn't become a burden.  I never thought I'd stop having fun with it.  I'm trying to turn that around now.  It was a really great feeling to be able to bounce back from that terrible first game and roll 2 great games after.

Here's hoping I can keep the momentum going.

Oh, and on a final note, I have set aside some tax refund money to *finally* pick up a new ball and some new bowling shoes.  I have used the same Ebonite V2 Strong for what seems like the last 5 years.  It's been a great ball and I won't get rid of it, but I'd definitely like to add to my arsenal.

    Till next time!
